It’s time for all IKEA and gardening fans to unite, as IKEA just announced its newest venture into indoor gardening…an indoor hydroponic garden system!
This May, just in time for May flowers, IKEA is introducing a gardening series that lets you grow your own tasty lettuce and herbs in water. Hydroponic gardening has been popular for years now, but IKEA has decided to join the club.
What Is Hydroponics?
Hydroponics simply means growing plants in water without soil. This is a much cleaner and easier method for those who don’t have much land or outdoor space. With added nutrients and the right amount of light, it allows you to garden and grow in any small space during any season. While Hydroponics is used around the world, IKEA found a way to make it simple and easy enough for any of us to bring into our homes.
The seeds are sprouted using the absorbent foam plugs that come with the system; these plugs keep the seeds moist without over-watering them. After the seeds have germinated, you simply transfer the entire foam plug into its own pot and fill it with pumice stones. These pots are then moved to a growing tray equipped with a solar lamp, providing nourishment year-round for the little plants, even in rooms without sunlight!!
The smart people at IKEA have worked with agricultural scientists in Sweden to make this as simple as possible, allowing those who don’t have green thumbs to be successful. IKEA plans to launch this kit in April, so look for the KRYDDA/VÄXER series at IKEA in the spring of 2016!

IKEA is definitely not the first company to get into the hydroponics field, with many great products already out there and user tested.
